Emulsified Sugar Scrubs
What's "Emulsified?"
An emulsifier is something that allows water and oils to combine, to create an emulsion- like a lotion. With the addition of a gentle emulsifier to my scrubs, when the oils and butters combine with the water in your shower or tub, they emulsify in use to create a soothing lotion that rinses completely clean instead of leaving behind a greasy feel.
Formulary
Sugar: By far the most ubiquitous ingredient in body scrubs and polishes, Blushie scrubs used refined white sugar, with a small grain size. I chose this particular type of sugar as it is very gently exfoliating, and lasts just long enough in the shower to get the dry skin off while still dissolving to rinse cleanly down your drains.
Palm Oil: A complex, creamy vegetable oil, palm is indispensable. It is produced from oil palm trees (different than the coconut palms) and has a very high content of saturated fatty acids. Recently, it is being used in the production of biodiesel fuel, increasing the demand. As the need for the oil grows, some unscrupulous producers have undergone slash and burn style harvesting tactics that endanger the orangutan's natural habitat. Fortunately, there are still many fair-trade farms producing ethically grown and harvested palm oil, and Blushie makes certain to only purchase from these fair and honest growers. In scrubs palm oil adds a decadent, creamy feel and increases the skin-softening effect.
Coconut Oil: I use a form of coconut oil know as "92 degree," which means that it has a much higher melt point than the usual 72 degree version, but will still melt when it comes in contact with the body. The addition of this oil, besides being an excellent emollient in its own right, helps the scrub keep its dense form while still being extremely rich and creamy.
Olive Oil: A classical skincare oil that needs no introduction, olive oil is high in oleic acid and antioxidants such as vitamin E and carotenoids. As an ingredient in scrubs olive oil dramatically ups the moisturizing quality while adding a smooth, silky feel.
Cocoa Butter: They make chocolate out of this, what's not to love? Cocoa butter is loaded with natural antioxidants and leaves behind a non-greasy barrier that helps retain and restore the moisture in your skin.
Polysorbate 20: What the heck is this? Well, Poly20 is an excellent, gentle emulsifier. It's what helps bond the oils in the scrub to the warm water in your shower to create a creamy lotion that leaves your skin feeling refresed and dewy soft.
Fractionated Coconut Oil: This is a version of coconut oil in which the long-chain fatty acids have been removed, making the oil liquid and room temperature. Due to the very small molecular size of fractionated coconut oil, this adds considerable glide and smoothness to the scrub.
Poppy Seeds: Add a bit of color and fun to the scrub.
Fragrance: A propriety blend of natural and synthetic fragrance components to create a delightful aroma.
Mica: A mineral-derivative coloring agent that adds a bit of sparkle to the scrub.
Phenoxyethanol & caprylyl glyvcol: A gentle, low-impact preservative designed to protect the user from environmental contaminations such as mold, yeast, and bacteria. Never ever use a body product that contains, or comes in contact with, water that does not contain a real preservative. Vitamin E and Rosemary Oleoresin Extract are examples of excellent antioxidants that are NOT preservatives.
